The weekly update

Thank you for joining us for the Weekly Update on JMpro! It’s Monday, July 20th, 2020 The Housing & Community Development Sub-Committee of Asheville City Council meets virtually this Tuesday at 10am, their first meeting since February. The group of 3 Council members includes Councilwoman Mayfield as Chair as well as Councilmembers Smith and Young. The packed agenda includes: Homeless to Housing, Community Development Block Grants for the next budget cycle, and City-Owned Land.
  • In the memorandum regarding Homeless to Housing, the City acknowledges that homesslessness is a housing issue, a public health issue made more evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, and an equity issue since (quote) “In our community, Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color people comprise 31% of the homeless population, compared to 11% of the general population.” (end quote) The memorandum also points out that maintaining programs for homelessness is a higher cost than ending homelessness, which will require increasing available units for housing, funding rental assistance and support services, and data driven strategies to make homelessness (quote) “rare… brief… and non-recurring.” (end quote)
  • Community Development Block Grants: In previous years, the Council did an in-person meeting with presentations from from each organization applying for funds. Due to lack of Spring meetings, the presentations will be limited to 3 minutes, and staff has presented recommendations for this Committee to approve.
  • The City-Owned Land presentation is not attached to the agenda, but is expected to include sites owned by the City that were among sites taken during urban renewal that are being studied for private-public partnership in housing development.
You can watch the meeting live from the City’s board & commission meeting portal or call in: 855-925-2801; then enter code 9791.
